2 ex-New York Giants ranked among NFL’s top-10 defensive tackles

The New York Giants’ defense in 2026 will look markedly different with a brand-new coaching staff in place and, most notably, the exit of Pro Bowl nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who was traded away in the offseason. Lawrence, who has delivered at an All-Pro level for several years, grew unhappy with his situation in New York, and that friction ultimately led to his departure to the Cincinnati Bengals. The trade marked a significant shift for a defense that had relied on his presence and disruption up front.
ESPN recently published its ranking of the league’s top NFL defensive tackles, based on input from executives, coaches, and scouts ahead of the 2026 season. It was no surprise that Lawrence cracked the top 10, given his track record and the attention he commands from offenses. Yet he wasn’t the only familiar Giants face near the top of the list, as Leonard Williams captured the No. 1 spot. An NFL coordinator called him “the most important player on that Super Bowl team,” adding that Williams embodies “the total package.” In the 2025 season, Williams totaled 7.0 sacks and posted a 38.0% run-stop-win rate, earning second-team All-Pro honors. His combination of size (6-foot-5, 310 pounds) and versatility forces offensive linemen to account for him across multiple alignments, making him a perpetual matchup problem.
A veteran NFC defensive coach noted that Williams can line up anywhere along the line and still pose a dominant threat. “You can line him up in front of the right tackle, the right guard, the center, the left guard, the left tackle — he can beat them all,” the coach said. “He’s always had game-changing ability, and he’s putting it all together now. And those around him are making plays because of it too.” Williams, who the Giants originally traded away in 2023, helped anchor a stout defensive front in New York and maintained a close working relationship with Lawrence during their time together. Williams’ best season came in 2020, when he registered 11.5 sacks. Nevertheless, Giants fans often viewed his tenure with a degree of skepticism after the team acquired him from the Jets in the middle of a rough season. The Giants later extracted more draft capital in the return they received when Williams left than they had surrendered years earlier to bring him to the Giants from the Jets.
Lawrence, meanwhile, clocked in at No. 7 on the list, despite coming off his least productive season since his breakout year in 2022. No defensive tackle drew more attention from opposing offenses than Lawrence, who faced double teams 71.3% of the time in 2025, a league-high figure among players with at least 300 pass-rush opportunities. The Bengals traded for Lawrence in the offseason, and the team has expressed satisfaction with his leadership this winter. “I think he’ll be rejuvenated there,” one NFC scout said. “He wasn’t happy in New York. He’s got to keep his conditioning in check, but when he’s at his best, he’s nearly impossible to block.” There was speculation that Lawrence would command multiple first-round picks in a trade, but the Giants instead received the 10th overall pick in the 2026 draft, which they used to select Francis Mauigoa, an offensive lineman out of Miami.
Seeing two former Giants near the top of the rankings is not an ideal reflection on the team’s front office, especially with Williams coming off a Super Bowl victory. Nonetheless, the Giants will hope that Lawrence’s departure yields better long-term value and that their new defensive framework can maximize the talents of the players who remain. As the organization shifts into 2026 with fresh leadership, the goal will be to rebuild a defense capable of competing at the highest level while managing the loss of a star interior disruptor and leveraging the strengths of a front that still includes playmakers capable of keeping opposing offenses honest. The next chapter for the Giants’ defense will hinge on how well the new regime can adapt and how quickly the remaining pieces can gel around the new scheme.
