2026 World Cup: France overpowers Morocco behind Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé goals to return to semifinals

France’s charge toward back-to-back World Cup finals continues as Les Bleus advance to the semifinals with a convincing 2-0 victory over Morocco. A surgical display of attacking talent powered by two clinical strikes from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé carried France past an obstinate Moroccan side and kept Didier Deschamps’ squad on track for a third consecutive appearance in the tournament’s final stage. The result sends France through and extends Morocco’s fairytale run, as the Atlas Lions’ hopes of repeating their 2022 success were dashed by a resilient French performance.
From the outset, France pressed high and sought to destabilize Morocco with quick combinations and relentless intensity. The opening minutes saw Mbappé and the rest of the French attack probing for openings, only for Yassine Bounou, nicknamed Bono, to attest to his form with a trio of top-tier saves in the first half. His best moment came when a foul by France earned a penalty that Mbappé was set to take after a notably lengthy VAR review. Bono guessed correctly and produced a crucial save to deny the world’s premier goal-scorer, keeping the scoreboard blank as the game remained tight. The early surge, though, underscored France’s intent: to stamp their mark early and seize control of the match.
France’s pressure did not relent as the first half gave way to a more open second period. Morocco began to find some rhythm and register attempts of their own, encouraging their fans with glimpses of counter-attacking potential. Yet the decisive moment arrived in the 60th minute when Mbappé converted on a turnover from the edge of the box, bending a precise shot past Bono and signaling the start of a critical period in the contest. The strike not only gave France the lead but also punctured Moroccan resolve, forcing them to chase the game thereafter.
The decisive moment quickly followed. Six minutes after Mbappé’s opener, Dembélé found the back of the net, doubling France’s advantage with a finish that showcased his movement and composure in front of goal. Mbappé himself played a meaningful role in the sequence, drawing the Moroccan defense out of position and creating space for Dembélé to execute the shot. The combination of Mbappé’s pace and Dembélé’s finishing prowess proved too much for Morocco to handle as France solidified their lead and pushed toward the victory that would secure their semifinal berth.
Bounou ended the match with six saves, still stifling France at critical moments, but the early six-minute window of pressure by France had already done the damage. The result left Morocco’s tournament arc at an end, eliminating them from the quest for a first-ever World Cup final against a French side buoyed by a commanding performance and two moments of sustained quality in front of goal.
During the match, Mbappé was briefly withdrawn in the 77th minute after a momentary concern over an injury. He was later seen back on the bench with an ice pack on his right ankle, and he appeared to be fine after the final whistle, celebrating with his teammates. The skipper’s resilience and leadership were on display as he supported his team to victory.
With the win, France move forward to the next round and will travel to Dallas for the semifinal, set to face the winner of the Spain-Belgium quarterfinal clash. The matchup promises another high-stakes challenge for Les Bleus as they push to extend their current World Cup title quest and pursue a third successive appearance in the final. The victory also serves as a reminder of France’s potency when Mbappé and Dembélé are firing, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse of what could come from a run to lift the trophy once more. As anticipation builds for the Dallas semifinal, the French side will look to build on this performance, maintaining focus, exploiting space, and controlling the tempo as they aim to reach the final once again.
