2027 Rutgers OL Commit James Cocozzo to Reclassify to 2026

Another Rutgers 2027 commit has decided to reclassify to join the 2026 class, as offensive lineman James Cocozzo will join the team this summer instead of next year.According to an article by 247sports’ Scarlet Nation, Cocozzo decided to reclassify because he believes that he will get more out of being at Rutgers this season than he will playing his senior season at the high school level. Cocozzo now joins the 2026 class, where he will be the seventh offensive lineman to join the program from the high school ranks this season.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementCocozzo is a 6-foot-3, 292-pound interior offensive lineman from Stillwater, New York. He is rated as a three-star and is the No. 66 IOL in the 2026 class according to the 247Sports composite.Cocozzo is not the only Rutgers commit to reclassify this month, as four-star running back Aiden Gibson, whom the Knights flipped from Penn State, decided to reclassify so he can join the team early. Gibson is rated as the No.23 running back in the class according to the 247Sports composite.Reclassification has proven fruitful for Rutgers recruits over the past few years. Most notably, current Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond reclassified from the 2025 class to the 2024 class. Raymond saw playing time right away, filling in for an injured Kyle Monangai, which allowed Rutgers fans to see his high potential after being on campus for just a few months at that point. Wydeek Collier and Latrell Noel are two examples of athletes who reclassified from the 2026 class to the 2025 class and saw playing time last year as well.
