3 keys for Bears defense vs. Vikings in Week 2

By admin — In News — September 17, 2026

Following all of the hoopla and excitement around the Chicago Bears and their Week 1 victory, there was also many questions about the team’s defense and how they can find a real balance with the high-powered offense they have. Coming into the season, the defensive focus was on the team finding better production from their pass rushers outside of Montez Sweat, while also hoping to have their secondary, led by Jaylon Johnson, bounce back. After giving up 37 points to the Carolina Panthers, Chicago’s defense has to show improvement against Minnesota, no matter who is at quarterback for the Vikings. In Week 1, the team’s starter, Kyler Murray, left the game with a concussion just 11 plays into his first-year with the team, but then veteran Carson Wentz came in relief and led them to their comeback win, with a 22-point fourth quarter.Playing at home should bring a much different energy to the team, and that could help lead to a better defensive performance, with the players knowing they have to turn it around. Here’s the top defensive keys for the Bears to defeat Minnesota in Week 2:Contain Justin JeffersonOnce Carson Wentz came into the game, the full focus of the Vikings passing game was on their superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Hauling in eight receptions on nine targets, Jefferson totaled 92 yards and two touchdowns, with his longest reception coming in at 28 yards. Jefferson will most likely draw the matchup of Bears corner Jaylon Johnson, who had his fair share of struggles against Carolina last week, so whatever it takes for the team to contain Jefferson, they must do. It feels nearly impossible to say that the Bears can shut him down completely, so starting with containing him is a start.Shut down the passing gameWith Kyler Murray recovering from a concussion, the Vikings starting quarterback is unknown at this stage in the week, but whether it’s Murray or Wentz, the Bears must shut down the passing game. Wentz was sacked three times against the Green Bay Packers, and Murray threw an interception, and all of that is possible for the Bears to repeat themselves on defense. Carolina chewed up plenty of yardage through the air last week, and although they pulled off the victory, Chicago will have to limit as much production as possible and force the Vikings to lean into the ground game.Close out the game as quickly as possibleThe fact that both games between these two teams last year were close means that the first opportunity there is to shut the door on Minnesota, the Bears must take it. In their Week 1 victory over Chicago last season, Minnesota put up 21 points in the fourth quarter and led them to spoil the coaching debut of Ben Johnson at Soldier Field. With the Bears offense showing their high-powered capabilities, if the defense can hold the Vikings down, they should be able to pull away quicker than last season.Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and InstagramThis article originally appeared on Bears Wire: 3 keys for Bears
