‘I’d give up any format’: Amid T20 boom, South African cricketer wants to score ‘10,000 Test runs’

South Africa’s teenage prodigy Lhuan-dre Pretorius has made his priorities abundantly clear. While he has established himself across franchise leagues worldwide, the 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batter says he would gladly abandon every other format if it meant enjoying a long and successful Test career for South Africa. At the moment, Pretorius is shining in Major League Cricket with the San Francisco Unicorns, where he recently produced an unbeaten 102 off 52 balls against MI New York, sealing his first T20 century. He is also a member of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, making his debut in 2025 and being retained for the 2026 season. In South Africa’s SA20 league, Pretorius emerged as the Paarl Royals’ leading run-scorer during his breakout 2024-25 campaign, while also representing the Titans in domestic cricket. Yet, despite his rapid ascent in white-ball cricket, he remains steadfast that Test cricket is his ultimate ambition.
“Hopefully, I’m fortunate enough to play a lot of Test cricket and be able to score 10,000 Test runs, because that’s a dream of mine. I’d give up any format or any form of cricket to play Test cricket for South Africa for as long as I can. There’s nothing better than Test cricket. It’s the pinnacle of the game,” Pretorius told Cricbuzz.
Pretorius has appeared in just two Tests for South Africa, both against Zimbabwe in mid-2025, but he has already announced himself as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. He has accumulated 235 runs in three innings at an average of 78.33, including a century and a half-century, with a career-best 153. His debut innings was record-breaking. At 19 years and 93 days, Pretorius struck 153 off 160 balls in Bulawayo to become South Africa’s youngest-ever Test centurion, breaking a 61-year-old record previously held by Graeme Pollock. The innings also made him the youngest player in Test history to score 150 on debut, surpassing Pakistan legend Javed Miandad. His 150 came off just 157 deliveries, the fastest 150 by a South African in Test cricket.
In addition, Pretorius joined an exclusive club by scoring a century on both his First-Class debut and his Test debut. Such feats underscore his rare talent and the potential to shape South Africa’s long-form future. As he continues to balance franchise assignments and international ambitions, the cricketing world watches closely to see how Pretorius will translate the blazing form of white-ball cricket into the patient, grind-and-graft discipline of Test match cricket. If he can sustain his trajectory, he could become a central figure for South Africa across formats for years to come, fulfilling the dream he holds so dear.
