‘Too much freestyling’ – Nagelsmann bemoans Germany’s Ecuador loss

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann demanded more structure from his team after losing 2-1 to Ecuador in their World Cup Group E finale on Thursday.
The four-times champions were already through as group winners but Nagelsmann still played his strongest team and they were deservedly beaten by the South Americans, who also progressed to the last 32 as a best third-placed team.

“There was a bit too much freestyling after the early lead,” Nagelsmann told ARD as he reflected on Leroy Sané’s second-minute opener, adding that he did not tell his team at half-time to tighten up but would do it “in a quiet moment.”
Nilson Angulo soon levelled and Gonzalo Plata reacted quicker than Manuel Neuer to win it on 77 minutes.
“We have to be more patient and stay a bit more structured in our positions. If we have too many positional changes and you don’t know where you are, it is hard to be productive,” Nagelsmann added.
“We need to be a bit calmer and not trying to score a goal in every move.”
