‘Tool of extortion’: PBKS star Shashank Singh opens up weeks after FIR was lodged against him for alleged physical assault on cook

Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh spoke out on Sunday about the legal case filed against him and his family, describing it as a fabricated extortion attempt built on exploiting his public profile as a cricketer. The trouble began last month in Bhopal’s Ratibad area when a complaint was registered against Shashank and his father, Shailesh Singh, a retired senior police officer, following allegations made by a cook who had worked at their home. The accuser claimed he was beaten, abused, and his phone snatched during the incident.
Shashank did not stay silent on social media, vehemently denying the allegations and saying the entire episode has left a deep mark on him and his family. While he has long faced criticism and trolling as a professional athlete, this case struck a different chord, casting him as someone who assaulted a man from a less privileged background. He noted that thousands of people criticized him before any facts were known, a response that felt disproportionate and hurtful.
“This incident changed me forever and taught me lessons I will carry for life. I am not writing this for sympathy. I am writing it because this was the first time my family and I experienced something like this, and I hope others learn from it,” he wrote, adding that he has endured years of online abuse and scrutiny but that this situation felt entirely different. He emphasized the impact of being quickly labeled as an aggressor and the challenge of defending his name in the public eye.
Shashank also pointed to irregularities in the chronology of events, noting that the complainant walked away from their home looking unharmed, only to appear later in a video showing clear injuries. He stated that the family remains unable to fully explain this discrepancy. He recounted that the cook had arrived at their home of his own accord, but the family eventually sent him away on the third day after noticing the man linger inside, taking photos and sharing them with others, something Shashank now regards as suspicious.
Moreover, Shashank claimed that police records later indicated the complainant had nine prior FIRs, suggesting a broader pattern of grievances that predated this visit. He questioned the credibility of the allegations and the timing of the injuries, underscoring that the sequence of events did not align with the account presented in the complaint.
In his public statements, Shashank urged caution about employing domestic help without proper verification and due diligence, underscoring that such precautions are essential to prevent complications stemming from untrustworthy or deceptive individuals who may seek to exploit personal vulnerabilities or public notoriety. He emphasized the broader lesson for others to carefully screen domestic help and to verify backgrounds to avoid similar situations in the future.
The case, initially reported as an alleged physical assault on a cook by Shashank Singh and his father, continues to unfold as investigations proceed. The PBKS star has maintained his innocence, framing the incident as an attempt at extortion that sought to leverage his status as a known athlete for financial gain. As the legal process continues, Shashank’s remarks reflect a desire to set the record straight while advising others to take prudent steps when engaging domestic workers and service personnel.
