48-47 – Rangers ambushed by Astros in 9-3 beating

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

The Texas Rangers dropped a 9-3 decision to the Houston Astros, as Houston built a commanding offensive night and Texas couldn’t keep pace. Texas starter Kumar Rocker faced a rough opening inning, making a pair of costly mistakes that set the tone early. His first miscue came on a leadoff 0-2 single to Jeremy Peña, which put a runner aboard for Yordan Álvarez and immediately put the Rangers in a hole. The trouble intensified when Rocker left a 93 mph fastball right down the middle to the game’s top hitter, an obvious miscue that allowed Álvarez to reach safely and helped Houston grab a 2-0 lead.
Rocker’s evening deteriorated from there, as he surrendered several more hard contact blows. In the third inning, LaMonte Wade Jr. cashed in with a grand slam off another pitch right down the middle, delivering a devastating blow and widening the gap. The damage continued in the fourth when Christian Vázquez lined a solo shot on a similarly hittable offering, keeping the Astros’ offense in the driver’s seat. By the end of his night, Rocker had logged 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on nine Astros hits. It wasn’t the rookie’s best performance, but he managed to eat innings and give Texas some marginal relief as the game progressed.
The Rangers bullpen did its best to hold the line, but the scoreboard kept climbing. Chris Martin entered in the ninth and allowed a pair of runs, a stretch that could mark the end of his long major-league career if Texas chooses to move in a different direction. Martin was also the lone reliever who managed to retire Álvarez, striking him out for the night, but that moment couldn’t salvage what had been a frustrating defeat for Rocker and company.
Offensively, Texas struggled to solve Astros starter Peter Lambert. The Rangers managed just one run on three hits over the first six innings, and the offense didn’t break through against Houston’s bullpen until the later frames. By then, the rally had come too late, and the Astros’ lead was insurmountable. Texas was held to the minimal output while Houston piled on more late insurance runs, reflecting a game where the visitors couldn’t capitalize on opportunities and the home squad dominated with timely hits and power.
Season-long context for the series shows the Rangers favorably positioned at 3-6 against Houston this year, meaning another stumble in the next meeting could end their Silver Boot hopes for 2026. In this matchup, Ezequiel Duran stood out for Texas, delivering a game-altering performance that earned him Player of the Game honors. Duran went deep twice and drove in all three Rangers runs, providing the few bright spots amid the defeat and demonstrating what Texas hoped they could build around as the second half of the season approaches.
Looking ahead, the Rangers will wrap up the first half with a pivotal rubber match against the Astros. Neither club has announced probable starters for Sunday’s finale, but fans can anticipate a competitive clash in a nationally watched series. The Sunday afternoon matinee from The Shed is scheduled for 1:35 pm CDT, and fans can catch all the action on the Rangers Sports Network. As Texas wraps the first half, the goal remains clear: close the gap against a familiar foe, gain momentum, and set a stronger tone for the second half of the season.
