We’ve wrapped up another week of the NFL offseason, and while there isn’t a lot cooking for the Arizona Cardinals, it’s the perfect time to check in on the rest of the NFC West and see what’s happening with the division’s other teams. So, what’s new with the San Francisco 49ers? Here are a few notable stories from the past week that Cardinals fans should be aware of.
The Cardinals revealed seven open practices that fans could attend, while the 49ers announced their own schedule of open practices, totaling 11 sessions that supporters will be able to attend. In coaching news, DeMeco Ryans has cemented himself as one of the top young head coaches in the league. His ascent has sparked comparisons from some within the NFC West, including 49ers linebackers coach K.J. Wright, a figure well known for his time with the Seattle Seahawks. While Wright isn’t pursuing a head coaching path at the moment, the buzz around his potential is noteworthy.
In wider NFL context as we look toward 2026, the Rams are widely viewed as the team to beat, with the Seahawks entering as the defending champions. The 49ers are expected to be competitive in the NFC West again, but a notable voice from the past believes this could be their year. On the field, Williams—49ers’ starting left tackle and long considered one of the premier players at his position—has ceded that top ranking. Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions has overtaken him for the mantle of the league’s best blindside protector, at least in the eyes of many observers.
Meanwhile, there’s big money moving in the ownership world: the estate of Paul Allen reached a deal to sell the Seattle Seahawks for more than $9.6 billion to the Khosla family. The Khosla family are already connected to the 49ers as limited partners, but to finalize the sale they will need to divest their stake in the 49ers. The intertwining of ownership and cross-team ties adds an extra layer of intrigue to the NFC West’s ongoing evolution.
