5 things to know about LSU football transfer wide receiver Tre Brown

LSU football signed a plethora of transfer portal wide receivers this offseason as new head coach Lane Kiffin rebuilds the offense. Among the new faces is former Old Dominion pass catcher Tre Brown III.Brown, a native of Savannah, GA, took the JUCO route to begin his career. In 2025, he transferred to Old Dominion and was a key piece of a Monarch offense that liked to stretch the field. The spread system Brown played in at ODU isn’t all that different from what Kiffin and OC Charlie Weis Jr will do at LSU. That should make the transition to Baton Rouge easier for Brown, even though he’s moving up a level coming from the Sun Belt.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWith the season just weeks away, some LSU fans are still getting acquainted with the many new faces in Baton Rouge. Today, we’ll take a closer look at Brown and what he can bring to the LSU offense this fall.At Old Dominion, Brown averaged over 20 yards per catch in 2025. His 20.1 yards per catch ranked No. 2 in the Sun Belt. LSU QB Sam Leavitt has the arm strength to catch the field and Brown has the speed to beat defenders over the top.Brown had seven 40+ yard receptions in 2025, ranking No. 6 in the country. That means 18% of his catches resulted in gains of 40 yards or more. LSU’s offense has missed those explosive plays on the outside the last two years — expect the Tigers to take some shots this fall.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAt 6-foot-2, the majority of Brown’s reps in 2025 were on the outside. Brown lined up out wide 92% of the time, spending just 8% of snaps in the slot. I expect Brown to take on a similar role at LSU. The Tigers don’t lack slot receiver types, and Kiffin and Co. need to fill the spots on the outside.Brown isn’t just a burner — he can make contested catches, too. Brown hauled in seven contested catches with the Monarchs in 2025. Seven contested catches on just 11 contested catch attempts put Brown at 63.6%, which ranked top-10 in the Sun Belt.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPer On3, Brown was the No. 97-ranked player in the portal. Given how many guys enter the portal these days, that’s impressive. Analysts view Brown as an SEC-caliber player. It’s worth noting that Kiffin and staff have a strong record scouting G5 wideouts. Remember what Tre Harris did at Ole Miss after transferring from UTSA?Along with being the No. 97 overall player, Brown was the No. 22 wide receiver.Despite being a redshirt junior, Brown has just one year of FBS experience — his 2025 season at Old Dominion. Before ODU, Brown played JUCO ball for a year. I’m not saying this to temper expectations for what Brown can do in Baton Rouge, but it can take some time for guys to adjust as they move up a level. On the bright side, that means Brown has a couple of years of eligibility. There’s a chance he’s not one-and-done in Baton Rouge. This article originally appeared on LSU Wire: 5 things to know about LSU football transfer wide receiver Tre Brown
