‘Depends on…’ – Romano eases fears over potential Liverpool exit as transfer priority outlined

Fabrizio Romano has sought to calm concerns about a potential high-profile departure from Liverpool by providing an update from the last 24 hours. Last month, the Italian transfer expert indicated that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Cody Gakpo, though Football Insider claimed that the Reds would only entertain a sale if a substantial offer came in for the 27-year-old.
Earlier this week, Lewis Steele noted that Liverpool are already planning for the new season with the Dutch forward in their plans, and Spurs’ concurrent interest in another Premier League winger could conceivably work in Liverpool’s favor. In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Romano discussed Tottenham’s potential attacking targets and said: “My understanding is that the main names to consider for Tottenham in the winger positions are Cody Gakpo—and at the moment Liverpool have not opened the door to an exit—and Savinho. Savinho is a top target for Tottenham. These two players are considered priorities for Tottenham for the winger role. I’m not saying they are joining because negotiations will decide that, but Savinho is number one, two, and three because Tottenham already wanted him a year ago. Cody Gakpo is also a desired option for Tottenham, but this depends on Liverpool at the moment. Liverpool are not opening exits, so we have to be patient and see what happens.”

Romano has not suggested Manchester City would be willing to sell Savinho, but Liverpool’s stance on their own left-sided winger appears explicit: he will not be put on the market, and only a substantial offer could sway that position. Football Insider reported that new head coach Andoni Iraola wants to give Gakpo opportunities to prove himself at Anfield, so the Dutch forward is likely to see significant game time on Merseyside even with Victor Muñoz’s arrival in June and the emergence of Rio Ngumoha in recent months.
A great deal can still change between now and the end of the transfer window, but Liverpool seem intent on holding onto a player who, while not at his peak in 2025/26, has already demonstrated that he can deliver consistently at the highest level (50 goals in 180 appearances for the Reds). It remains to be seen whether Enzo Maresca will find a way to utilize Savinho more than Pep Guardiola did, but the club’s position to keep hold of him has not wavered.
Ultimately, Liverpool appear determined to maintain a hardline stance, standing firm on their valuation and strategic plan as the window progresses.
