‘We are ambitious’ – Alonso sets out plan for Chelsea revival after disappointing last season

Xabi Alonso says he is confident Chelsea can have a significantly stronger season ahead. The Spaniard has taken charge of a club that finished tenth in the Premier League last term and missed out on European football, and he acknowledges that time will be a crucial factor as he begins the task of building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
“Time will tell,” Alonso said when asked whether he believes he will be given the opportunity to assemble a team ready to challenge for the Premier League. He insisted that the club must remain ambitious, aiming to win many matches and be consistently competitive. He has previously emphasized the need to make pivotal decisions that establish robust principles, a strong mentality, and a clear culture within the club. “Time will tell; I’m not going to predict what will happen in May because it’s too early to say that. What I am sure of is that I am confident and optimistic we can enjoy a great season, but that requires preparation, hard work, intelligence in many aspects, and then that belief from the fans here at Stamford Bridge will be very important.”
Alonso also acknowledged that his overarching objective is to restore Chelsea to European competition, though he stressed that achieving that goal will require numerous correct steps. “That’s certainly a goal, but to reach it you must do many things right,” he explained. “Being part of that process—how we want to play, how we want to see ourselves, and how we want to approach matches wherever we go—that’s my job, and I’m really looking forward to it.” He noted that while the squad is still a work in progress, with some pieces in place only in the early days, the intention is clear: Chelsea must be in Europe, and they will strive to get there.
“Time will tell, but we are ambitious, and to be at Chelsea you need to share that energy, that ambition, and that hunger for success as well.” Alonso’s mission is to guide the club toward those aspirational targets, building a cohesive unit and a style of play that aligns with the club’s values while delivering results on the pitch. The road ahead will involve careful planning, recruitment, and culture-building, all aimed at returning Chelsea to the forefront of English and European football.
As the season approaches, the club and its supporters will be watching closely to see how the new regime under Alonso translates into on-field performance and results. The potential for a significant upturn remains, but it will require time, a clear plan, and the collective belief of the players, staff, and fans. Chelsea’s ambition is unmistakable, and the expectation is that Alonso will lay the groundwork for a successful era that could redefine the club’s trajectory in the Premier League and beyond.
