In the final 30 minutes of play, the Scarlet Knights would be held scoreless while the Badgers found the momentum offensively to pull away. Rutgers would keep it close throughout the first half, as they only found themselves down by three at halftime. The Knights would force the Badgers to punt twice and would twice strand the Badgers on fourth down deep in their own territory twice, forcing them to take two field goals. Rutgers would keep pace by scoring a touchdown of their own, off of a 30-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Dyzier Carter, and by hitting a 45-yard field goal. The field goal was kicked by Jack Scullion, with starting kicker Dane Pizarro out due to injury. Wisconsin’s offense would start humming in the second half, with the Knights having no answer for it. The Badgers would kick a field goal on their first drive of the half to extend their lead before scoring two touchdowns on their next two drives. Rutgers’ defense would recover a fumble on Wisconsin’s fourth drive of the half, but their offense would be unable to score for the entire half as the Badgers would cruise to victory. The Knights’ defense continued the tradition of making backup freshman quarterbacks look like battle-tested veterans, as they allowed Ryan Hopkins to complete 18 out of 24 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Wisconsin ran the ball 29 times for 122 yards. On offense, the Knights struggled to keep their quarterback upright, as they surrendered five total sacks on the day and eight total tackles for loss. They also struggled to get the run going, totaling 94 yards on 36 carries, or 2.6 yards per carry. The one slight positive in this game is that AJ Surace looked more consistent in this game than in games past. He completed 14 out of 24 total passes for 161 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. This game was a step in the right direction for Surace, compared to his performance in games past. Rutgers will hope to get a few of their playmakers back healthy for next week, as they will return home to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, Nov. 14. That game will take place at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
