PROVIDENCE – Bay View wasn’t content with just upsetting the top seed in the Division III girls soccer tournament. The Bengals had a trophy in mind after that semifinal stunner, and they ultimately lifted it Saturday evening at Rhode Island College. Giada Palano’s move from defense to attack helped provide the key moment before the raindrops returned at Alumni Stadium. Her goal in the 67th minute was enough for Bay View to edge Providence Country Day, 1-0, in a tense Nov. 7 title match. Palano fired home a cross from Hadley Devolve with extra time and penalty kicks starting to loom on the horizon. The Bengals were able to protect keeper Taylor Pitney and the lead from there, winning by the same margin they used to shock Cranston East earlier in the week. “I knew I was going to cry either way, win or loss,” Palano said. “This has never happened to me. We’ve never made it past semis. “It’s crazy. I’m in so much shock. I can’t even think.” The Knights used a high defensive line to catch Bay View offsides a handful of times in the game, but the Bengals finally got it right deep into the second half. Devolve chased down a throw in the left corner and cut a pass between two defenders. Palano was alone in front and drilled a strong right-footed shot into the right half of the cage. “I believed in my team and believed in myself so much,” Palano said. “I knew we could do anything.” Watch RI games on NFHS!Palano retreated to her own half for the remainder, and Bay View clamped down on any chances Providence Country Day hoped to generate. The Knights piled up a combined 12 goals in victories over Johnston and Pawtucket but couldn’t find a way to the net here. Pitney made the only two saves required to help the Bengals close this one out. “I had the most confidence in them,” Pitney said. “I knew. I had all the faith in the world they could do it. They made me as comfortable in net as I was.” Providence Country Day (14-3-2) was bidding for a second championship since 2022 and a first at this level. The Knights battled to 1-1 and 0-0 draws in two previous meetings against Bay View (14-3-2), which received a Molly Daly goal in the sixth minute and held on to eliminate Cranston East in a Wednesday night thriller at Johnston High. The Bengals left it a little later this time but eventually found a way to hang a first banner since consecutive Division II crowns in 2007 and 2008. “I don’t have any words,” Pitney said. “I never thought we would make it this far. Last season was good, but we wanted more out of it. “This season I felt like a switch flipped for us. We wanted it more than anyone.”BAY VIEW (1): Giada Palano; assist – Hadley Devolve.
