On Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers held a press conference to introduce Cameron Carr, the incoming rookie who was taken with the No. 24 pick in this week’s NBA draft. They acquired his rights by trading their No. 25 pick, which they had used on Sergio de Larrea, after the New York Knicks took Carr.
Carr has the potential to become the type of athletic 3-and-D player the Lakers badly need, and possibly something more than that. He has a 42.5-inch vertical leap and a wingspan of nearly 7-foot-1, and the 6-foot-5 guard just wrapped up an impressive junior season at Baylor University.
He called coming to the Lakers’ facility “a moment of happiness.”
“First things first, it’s a blessing to be here and get to sit down and talk to you guys,” Carr said. “Walking in the building, first thing you notice is the rich tradition of the people that have been here before you.
“It’s a moment of happiness. As a kid you always dreamed of walking across that stage and accomplishing everything you wanted to. Man, it just felt good to walk in the gym and look at the people that came before me. Now I’m in their shoes.”
He also said that finding out he was going to the Lakers was “surreal” and something he had always dreamt of.
“I’m going to the Lakers! It was more of an exciting thing. It felt surreal,” Carr said. “It didn’t feel real for the first couple minutes when I found out. It was trying to get my head around, ‘Man, I’m about to walk across the stage and be an NBA player.’ I’ve dreamed of this my whole life, especially since I was a kid. So it took a second. Still trying to get my head wrapped around it, but nothing but excitement and happiness. I feel more motivation to work.”
Carr averaged 18.9 points on 49.4% field-goal shooting and 37.4% from 3-point range, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals a game this past season. He threw down a number of highlight dunks, and he also had some exciting defensive plays. He will now join forward Adou Thiero as another young, athletically gifted player the Lakers will try to develop into a regular contributor.
