The Minnesota Vikings will keep their quarterback competition going into training camp, but not for the entire duration. It would be wise for the team to name a starter sooner rather than later to establish the starting offense, build chemistry, and hit Week 1 with momentum. Who will win—Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy—remains undecided, and the possibility of Carson Wentz was jokingly floated. A key question is whether players and team leaders will have a say in selecting the starter.
As outsiders, it’s hard to ignore the influence of veteran players who are aiming for a Lombardi. In a brutal league where circumstances shift year to year, the Vikings—built as a win-now team—have veterans with limited time who want the quarterback chosen to maximize weekly success. Yet head coach Kevin O’Connell’s priority is to pick the quarterback who gives the team the best chance to win each week, regardless of players’ opinions or personal ties. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert cautions that players likely won’t have much influence on O’Connell’s final call, and their personal feelings are only marginally relevant to who is best suited to run the offense.
No players who spoke during offseason sessions indicated a favorite, and star receiver Justin Jefferson said he plans to work with both quarterbacks over the summer. The takeaway from Seifert’s report is that players and the head coach are voicing the right sentiments: the competition is genuine, and players aren’t publicly taking sides. The trust should be placed in O’Connell and his decision because it’s his system, and he knows which quarterback fits it best.
