Riyad Mahrez delivered a standout performance as Algeria battled to a 3-3 draw with Austria in Kansas, securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds. The Algeria captain, renowned for his time with Al Ahli, sparked his team by scoring the second equaliser to level the score at 2-2, and he appeared to have clinched the victory with a stoppage-time winner three minutes into added time. Houssem Aouar, who has won the RSL title with Al Ittihad, created both of Mahrez’s goals, delivering assists that showcased his playmaking vision. Mahrez’s first goal brought Algeria back from a deficit, while his second put them ahead late in the match.
However, the late drama continued as Sasa Kalajdzic headed home in the 96th minute to earn Austria a point, denying Algeria the win and leaving the groups with Austria as Group J runners-up. That result meant Algeria must contend with Switzerland in the Last 32. Mahrez, who has twice won the AFC Champions League Elite, was named Man of the Match and remains a crucial figure for Algeria as they push for progression. The 2024-25 season has seen Mahrez reach 39 international goals, extending his tally at a critical moment for his national team.
