Boston, MA – June 25: The Boston Red Sox hosted the New York Yankees at Fenway Park as closer Aroldis Chapman took the mound in the ninth inning. The Red Sox, mired in a disappointing season, are starting a multi-week exploration of potential returns at the trade deadline, with Chapman at the center of those discussions. Rumors swirl: veteran scouts suggest two prospects could be enough for Chapman, possibly including a top-100 type, though some say his value could be even higher. With a 2.08 ERA and 14 saves this season, and a career total approaching the all-time mark for closers, the 38-year-old Chapman is being viewed as more than a rental by many teams. The Dodgers, Mariners, and Phillies are among the teams generating headlines for interest, but there are five realistic suitors in consideration.
For the Dodgers, the proposed package centers on River Ryan, a right-handed pitcher in the top-100, and Chase Harlan, a third baseman with notable power. The Dodgers’ deep system is attractive, though Boston’s outfield wealth complicates matters since Boston already has a crowded logjam comprised of Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida, and Jarren Duran. The suggested deal would involve sending Ryan as the top-100 piece, plus Harlan, a raw-power bat who could help address third-base uncertainty. The idea is to balance giving up impact prospects with acquiring front-end rotation depth and a potential long-term impact bat.
For the Mariners, the proposed package would be Ryan Sloan, a right-hander, paired with Luke Stevenson, a catcher. The plan would feature Sloan as the headliner, given his high prospect ranking, with Stevenson added for organizational balance and marketability. Sloan is viewed as one of the better pitching prospects in the American League, while Stevenson would provide value beyond pure stats.
Overall, the trade talk reflects Boston’s strategic tension between rebuilding and acquiring long-term value while navigating a crowded farm system and a season that hasn’t met expectations. The team will continue to weigh which prospects could best help the future while determining how to maximize Chapman’s value in a potential deadline deal.
