The Zion Williamson era in New Orleans has not unfolded as hoped. With the 2019 No. 1 pick from Duke, playoff glory once seemed within reach, yet the Pelicans have posted losing records in five of Williamson’s seven NBA seasons and have made the playoffs only twice, losing in the first round both times. Joe Dumars, hired as executive vice president of basketball operations in April 2025, fired head coach Willie Green in November after a 2-10 start; interim coach James Borrego then guided the team to a 24-46 record. In May, Dumars introduced Jamahl Mosley as the new head coach, signaling a desire to leave his mark on the roster, which could include trading Zion.
Williamson had solid production last season, averaging 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Here’s a look at teams that could be interested in acquiring the two-time All-Star.
Zion Williamson to the Chicago Bulls has been a recurring topic. The Pelicans do not own a first-round pick in this year’s draft, but reports indicate Dumars is pursuing one. Trading away Trey Murphy, Herb Jones, or Dejounte Murray seems more plausible than dealing Zion, though anything remains possible for the Pelicans at this juncture. A deal with the Bulls would be especially attractive, as Chicago has two first-round picks to offer (Nos. 4 and 15). Chicago is seeking a marketable superstar to build around, and Williamson fits that description. Notably, Bulls executive Bryson Graham, now in charge of basketball operations, spent 2010–2025 in the Pelicans’ front office.
Zion Williamson to the Boston Celtics has also been floated. After Boston lost out on Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has been working around the clock. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggested a “bidding war” for Jaylen Brown could begin, with teams preparing for the possibility that Brown could be moved. If a draft pick is included, a deal could materialize quickly. The Celtics have long been rumored to covet Murphy and Williamson, given Stevens’ desire for a player who can drive to the rim. Boston is seeking a menacing interior presence to improve scoring efficiency.
