Katie Swan almost quit tennis – she’s now Britain’s first Wimbledon winner

After nearly quitting tennis, Katie Swan produced Britain’s first Wimbledon win of the year by defeating Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu to reach the second round, sealing the victory with her fifth match point. She dropped to her knees, head in hands as Court 16 erupted in celebration. Swan, ranked world No. 196, became the first Brit to advance to the second round after Katie Boulter’s earlier loss left Swan as the sole victor on Monday. She celebrated with the knowledge that she would face Madison Keys in the next round.
“I honestly think it’s probably number one in my career,” Swan said, describing the moment as pure relief—especially after she saved break point when leading 40-0 and finally clinched the win. Swan, a former Australian Open junior finalist who was the youngest Brit to play in the Billie Jean King Cup, had been earmarked for big things when she debuted at Wimbledon in 2016. Yet injuries, including a serious back problem, derailed her progress and she spent eight months away from the sport, finding it hard to imagine a comeback.
By the end of 2024, Swan was coaching at a Kansas tennis club where her family lives and even considered retirement due to the pain. She described a turning point after receiving treatment from a doctor in Arizona who found that her nerves weren’t functioning properly; the treatment was difficult but ultimately transformative. After months of tears and hardship, Swan returned to competitive tennis in 2025 with no ranking, rebuilding from the World Tennis Tour, a victory in San Diego in June that year lifting her back into the top 1000, followed by five more titles and a rise to the top 200.
A Wimbledon wildcard gave Swan another chance on the sport’s biggest stage, her first appearance at Wimbledon in three years. She expressed immense gratitude on social media for the wildcard, thanking her supporters and acknowledging the hard road she traveled, while eagerly anticipating competing on the sport’s most prestigious stage again.
