Ronald Koeman has stepped down as the Netherlands national team manager after their elimination from the World Cup in the Round of 32. The Dutch were leading Morocco, but an injury-time equaliser forced extra time, and Morocco ultimately won on penalties. Koeman has resigned after a three-year spell in charge.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, the 63-year-old thanked the players for their dedication, character, and trust, which motivated him daily. He also expressed gratitude to his staff, the KNVB, all behind-the-scenes personnel, and the clubs with which he had the privilege of working. Most of all, he thanked the supporters for their unwavering support, especially during difficult moments, describing it as a tremendous honor to represent the Netherlands as national coach.
Koeman said he is leaving with mixed emotions, admitting he would have preferred to finish his tenure with a world title, a dream that remained unfulfilled. Nevertheless, he emphasized pride in what football has brought him—the people he has met and the chance to turn his passion into a profession. He concluded by thanking everyone for years filled with trust, criticism, support, disappointments, and successes.
