Claiming a season like no other for the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars would be an understatement. In their first Atlantic League season two years ago, they finished with a league-worst 36-89 record. The following year wasn’t any better, as they went 31-95, still last in the standings. This season, however, the Boxcars have already surpassed those win totals, posting a 40-21 record through June and clinching the North Division’s first-half title along with their first playoff berth. They’ve gone 22-7 in their last 29 games, including a 5-1 victory over Lancaster at Meritus Park on June 30. Through 12 series, they’re 9-1-2. The Boxcars sealed the first-half crown by taking five of six games against the Lexington Legends last week. Eddy Demurias earned Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors after going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 14 strikeouts across 15 innings, allowing just four hits. The tentative playoff schedule has the Division Championship Series set as a best-of-five starting on Sept. 15, with the League Championship Series to follow as a best-of-five beginning Sept. 22.
