Dan Evans began his professional career in 2006, climbing to two ATP titles and reaching a career-high world ranking of 21 in 2023. The former British number one has never hidden his opinions and wears his heart on his sleeve, a trait that often unsettled those in authority and may have contributed to him not receiving a Wimbledon singles wildcard. At Wimbledon, he was granted a doubles berth with his protégé Henry Searle, but he tearfully bowed out after a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round.
“I know they don’t like people voicing their views, and I’m more than happy to voice mine,” Evans told BBC Sport. “So not getting a wildcard was bewildering. I thought it was disrespectful, to be frank.” Still, he added, it’s been a different kind of end, but a pretty cool one.
There’s no doubt Evans’ authenticity has resonated with many fans, and Sir Andy Murray captured that sentiment. “He’s unbelievably talented and very competitive. He’s a bit of a bad boy, maybe, but he has a good heart,” Murray said.
A crowd of supporters gathered on the outside court, even after long queues, hoping to witness Evans and Searle pull off a shock victory over the ninth seeds. Fans from his Solihull hometown wore T-shirts reading “Thanks Dan” as they queued for Court 15, some camping out overnight to secure a prime spot. Tom Ritchie, one of the group, said, “We wanted to thank him for the career—he’s had some brilliant moments. The queues and the popularity show how much people admire him. He’s down-to-earth and relatable, which is why we love him.”
Evans’ career has had its share of peaks and valleys. He has enjoyed standout moments—breaking into the top 25, capturing two ATP titles, and long-time representation of Britain in the Davis Cup—along with tougher episodes, including a one-year ban in 2017 after testing positive for cocaine. “Tennis is such a great sport and an amazing career. I’ve got no other qualifications, so it’s given me a job for life,” Evans reflected, adding, “Obviously I made a massive mistake and I regret letting people down.”
