Bowles Extremely Impressed With 1 Quality of Rueben Bain Jr.

The Rueben Bain Jr. era is arriving in Tampa Bay with noticeable impact, as expected. Even before the season, Bain Jr. seemed set to challenge for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, showing exactly what the Buccaneers hoped to see when they drafted him 15th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. The entire organization has bought into the Bain Jr. buzz, recognizing the progress he’s already demonstrated. Head coach Todd Bowles has spent the offseason praising the football IQ Bain Jr. displayed during practice, and Jenna Laine of ESPN noted that Bowles and even quarterback Trevor Lawrence were impressed by his development.
Bowles highlighted Bain Jr.’s intelligence and game understanding, explaining why his length was a concern for some teams. Bain’s arms are shorter than typical edge rushers, leading to questions about his ability to handle longer NFL tackles. Yet the Miami product has dispelled those doubts, showing the discipline to compensate for any perceived limitations and positioning himself for success. Bowles stressed that Bain exhibits traits you can’t teach and doesn’t learn like a typical rookie, noting that he can do things that a three- or four-year veteran can do.
Bain’s college production backs Bowles’ assessment. He led the country with 83 quarterback pressures last season at Miami, according to PFF, displaying relentless effort and a diverse pass-rush repertoire that disrupted ACC offenses. Laine also pointed out an early minicamp moment where Bain knocked down an outside-the-pocket throw from Baker Mayfield during the first-team period, illustrating his impact even in practice.
For the Buccaneers, a defense that hasn’t boasted a double-digit sack artist since 2021 faces a long-standing pass-rush weakness. Bain’s rapid maturation is not just a luxury but a potential crucial solution to a multi-year drought.
