Former Texas A&M linebacker Keith Mitchell, a key figure in the renowned Wrecking Crew and one of the program’s most prolific pass rushers, has died at 51. Mitchell starred for the Aggies from 1993 to 1996, emerging as a feared edge defender in college football. In his final two seasons, he disrupted opposing quarterbacks, finishing his senior year with 14.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. His standout play earned him All-American honors from The Sporting News and College Football News, along with MVP recognition in Texas A&M’s Alamo Bowl victory.
Despite his college production, Mitchell went undrafted in 1997 but quickly earned his place in the NFL. He signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent five of his seven NFL seasons. His breakout came in 2000, when he recorded 85 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown, earning a Pro Bowl selection and solidifying his status as one of the league’s top linebackers that year.
Mitchell’s family released a statement through Travis Brown of KBTX, thanking supporters during this challenging time. The message read in part: “On behalf of our entire family, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love, prayers, and support that have surrounded Keith during this incredibly difficult time. Your messages, encouragement, and kindness have meant more to us than words can express. We are profoundly grateful for every prayer lifted, every thoughtful message shared, and every act of compassion shown to our family.” Mitchell leaves behind a legacy built on relentless effort, quiet leadership, and a career that inspired generations of Aggies and Saints fans alike.
