There’s always a lively debate among Illinois fans about who the university’s biggest rival is. Isaac, Greg, and I tackled the topic on The Champaign Room Podcast, where we held an Illinois rivalry draft, and the discussion spilled over onto social media. We identified nine rivals: Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State.
The rivalry debate is subjective, shaped by where you grew up, where you live now, and when you became an Illini fan. Each school has reasons for being disliked, but I wanted to lay out some history and fun facts to help everyone decide who really is Illinois’ top rival.
Northwestern was my first pick, and we all agreed it would be a top choice. Northwestern is the only other Illinois-based school in the Big Ten, and the two campuses sit about 150 miles apart. They’re Illinois’ only conference opponent in football every year and in basketball twice per season. With conference realignment, that protected rivalry is a key factor. The Land of Lincoln Trophy is at stake whenever these two meet in the regular-season football finale during rivalry week. Illinois and Northwestern first played basketball in the 1907‑08 season (March 7, 1908), an 18‑13 road win for Illinois that started a six-game Illini streak. The football series began earlier, with the first meeting in 1892; Illinois won the early battles handily, including a 66‑0 rout in Champaign in 1894. Illinois has dominated the basketball series overall, while the football series is much closer, with a 59‑55 Illinois edge. The combination of history and proximity makes Northwestern feel like Illinois’ primary rival, even if many Illini fans don’t view it that way with the same intensity as some others.
Purdue was ranked No. 2 in our draft, and I agree that the Boilermakers stand as Illinois’ second‑biggest rival. West Lafayette is roughly 120 miles from Champaign, and the two teams share a protected football rivalry that guarantees annual games. The two programs faced each other twice each season in basketball before Big Ten expansion, though that protection wasn’t guaranteed last season. Looking ahead, they will resume meeting at Mackey Arena and the State Farm Center next season, reinforcing the north-south proximity factor that adds to the rivalry’s intensity. The geographical aspect remains as crucial as ever for the rivalry’s significance.
