Sunderland had stormed to promotion in 1998-99, collecting 105 points and overwhelming the opposition with a solid defense and a potent attack. The backbone included young goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, well protected by defenders Chris Makin, Paul Butler, Andy Melville, and Michael Gray, while Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn led the attack, supported by Nicky Summerbee and Allan Johnston, with Daniele Dichio and Michael Bridges ready to fill in. Midfield was marshaled by captain Kevin Ball, with Lee Clark and Alex Rae also contributing, and as a unit the team performed exceptionally well. Despite the potential shown, the squad lacked extensive top-flight experience, with Niall Quinn and Lee Clark among the few to have regularly played at higher levels in English football.
As Clark, Bridges, and Johnston prepared to depart and Melville had already left on a free, manager Peter Reid needed both quality reinforcements and Premiership know-how. On this day in 1999, he landed a player who fit both criteria: Steve Bould. A household name, the centre-back had been a linchpin of Arsenal’s title-winning sides in 1989, 1991, and 1998, and had also claimed the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. After 11 years at Highbury and 274 league appearances following his arrival from Stoke City, Bould had become a squad player in his later years, even signing a new deal with Arsenal. But Reid could see the chance for more regular first-team football.
Arsenal initially valued Bould at £1 million, a figure Arsène Wenger respected, yet Sunderland secured a £500,000 deal to bring him north. The announcement, made on this day in 1999, declared the agreement and stated that the formalities would be completed after the weekend. Bould’s agent, Steve Kutner, explained to the Sunderland Echo that Bould was eager to join Peter Reid, had just signed a two-year contract with Arsenal, and believed Sunderland offered the best opportunity to play regularly. With interest from other clubs but a strong preference for Sunderland, Bould expressed his desire to work with Reid and help the club move forward.
