Former Nebraska Athletic Director hired at another Big Ten schools

A former Nebraska athletic director is heading back to the Big Ten, as Shawn Eichorst has been named Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin. Eichorst previously led Nebraska’s athletics department from 2012 to 2017, during which time Nebraska teams captured three NCAA Team National Championships and earned 14 Big Ten Conference titles. He is perhaps best known for firing football coach Bo Pelini after seven straight seasons with nine or more wins. Eichorst said at the time that the team’s performance in big games had consistently fallen short, adding, “We weren’t good enough in the games that mattered. I didn’t see that changing at the end of the day… this isn’t a day of celebration for me. We’ve got a lot of good, young people in our program who are hurting.” Pelini finished with an overall 67-27 record but was 8-17 against AP-ranked teams and 0-3 in conference championship games. Eichorst hired then-Oregon State coach Mike Riley to replace Pelini; Riley stayed for three seasons in Lincoln before a 4-8 record in 2017 led to his dismissal. Eichorst was himself fired from Nebraska in late September 2017. Since 2018, he has served as Deputy AD for Texas. Now returning to the Big Ten, Eichorst hopes to deliver stronger results at Wisconsin. For ongoing Nebraska coverage, follow CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like their Facebook page.
