NCAA Football 2003, the seventh entry in EA Sports’ college football series, doubled as that summer’s dorm-room must-have and became part of the University of Oregon’s fresh recruitment narrative. Oregon quarterback and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Joey Harrington graced the cover wearing a futuristic black-chested, green-sleeved, yellow-trimmed uniform, emblematic of the program’s new approach: leveraging Phil Knight’s Nike fortune and innovative branding to lure the nation’s top athletes. The Ducks rolled out bold apparel, upgraded facilities, and a distinct, mission-driven aesthetic—paralleling these efforts with design touches like Knight Arena’s “Deep in the Woods” basketball court—to reflect a forward-thinking philosophy. This vision attracted talent worldwide, even drawing in unlikely crossover figures such as Sol Ruca, WWE’s newest standout, who joked about Oregon’s reputation for academics while staking her claim as a rising star in WWE.
Ruca, a graduate of Western Christian High School in Upland, California, saw Oregon’s difference firsthand: the stark contrast between her small-town high school and Eugene’s packed venues and state-of-the-art facilities that promised the chance to develop elite athletes. “I went to a really small high school, so I didn’t get that whole high-school experience of football games and whatnot,” she explains. “When I toured Oregon, the facilities were absolutely incredible. I knew that’s where I wanted to be.”
In 2019, she helped the Oregon Ducks Acrobatics and Tumbling Team finish as NCATA National Title runners-up and won a National Title in the Open Pyramid event. After weighing post-graduate paths, a chance comment from a parent nudged her toward wrestling. “My mom was watching WWE on TV and said, ‘She should do that.’ A few days later I called her and said, ‘I guess I have a WWE tryout.’” Just as she pursued colleges and scholarships, Ruca reached out to WWE, which responded quickly. Her first WWE tryout confirmed that this was her path, as the room of hopefuls united behind a shared goal: to seize this opportunity for purpose and impact.
Her journey has since positioned her as one of WWE’s brightest young stars to watch, blending athletic versatility with a fresh, ambitious style that signals a new era for the sport.
