João Palhinha may still rank among Bayern Munich’s most expensive signings after arriving in 2024, but his future at the club is now in doubt. Considered surplus to requirements midway through his first season, Palhinha sought a new club in the summer of 2025 and joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan, with Spurs negotiating an option to buy for around €25 million in the Portuguese midfielder’s contract. He spent much of the season in and out of the side, but the former Fulham player delivered when it mattered most in the closing stages, scoring two crucial goals to help 2025’s Europa League winners secure a place in the Premier League. He even netted the decisive 1-0 goal on the final day against Everton to seal survival. Despite these contributions, it remained unclear whether Tottenham would exercise the option to retain him.
Now it’s clear they will not. With the official signing of Matheus Fernandes, rumored to cost around €100 million, and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali reportedly on the brink of a €116 million move if all bonuses are met, Tottenham have no need for Palhinha. This shift was underscored by sports writer Tom Barclay, who noted that most Spurs fans likely expected the outcome: Tonali and Fernandes on blockbuster deals mean Palhinha won’t be back. The club is entering a new era, and supporters may appreciate how Palhinha stepped up when needed most. Florian Plettenberg echoed this update, adding that a return to Sporting Lisbon is unlikely for now as Palhinha would revert to Bayern Munich, with the Tottenham deal effectively off following the Tonali and Fernandes signings.
A move to Sporting remains complicated due to Bayern’s asking price, and several other clubs have shown interest. Reversing what could be Bayern’s most costly transfer mistake will not be easy, and Palhinha has done nothing wrong, yet finds himself sidelined. There is hope he can secure a permanent home this summer. An assessment suggests a Sporting return could happen, even if the reported costs seem high for the Portuguese giants, as midfield stalwart Martin Hjulmand is rumored to be moving to Atlético Madrid. Negotiations are proving tough, but a move could still proceed, potentially giving Sporting the funds to invest and leaving Palhinha to fill a significant midfield hole. If everything goes through, Palhinha could finally find the permanent home he deserves.
