Lewis Hamilton secured a remarkable pole for Saturday’s sprint at the British Grand Prix after a gripping Friday at Silverstone that saw him top the standings in practice and in all three qualifying sessions. His victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix two weeks earlier—his first in Ferrari red—has sparked a renewed drive in the seven-time world champion as he aims to close the gap on championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Basking in the home crowd’s energy, Hamilton emerged onto the track with razor focus, his Ferrari showing strong pace from the outset. Early practice suggested promise, with Hamilton beating Antonelli and Mercedes teammate George Russell, even as the teen sensation posted faster times in the first two sectors.
Hamilton’s ability to claw back time through the slower bends complemented by his teammate Charles Leclerc’s efforts helped mitigate Ferrari’s straight-line shortcomings highlighted in Austria. Yet Antonelli appeared to reclaim momentum as sprint qualifying began, with Hamilton delivering a stellar lap around a circuit he has won at a record nine times. In a close contest between Hamilton and Antonelli—the two closest rivals in the second sprint qualifying session—teams waited for the optimal moment to strike, savoring a final chance for a pace-setting lap before the flag.
As Hamilton rolled to pole at Silverstone, Antonelli crossed the line first with a 1:28.387, briefly topping the board before Leclerc’s Ferrari followed, unable to topple the pace. That left Hamilton Ferrari’s last hope for pole, and he delivered with a rapid lap, especially through sector three, stealing pole by a razor-thin 0.011 seconds ahead of Antonelli to set up an eagerly anticipated sprint the next day. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen remained in contention, finishing P3 ahead of Leclerc, while Russell’s Mercedes had to settle for P5.
“I can’t express how big a dream this still is, even now,” Hamilton said after sprint qualifying, reflecting on the flow and setup achievable at this track and the sense that the right configuration and team are delivering every weekend. “The car has felt great today—thanks to everyone back at the factory. We’re continuing to push, making tiny improvements here and there. I’m really grateful to take pole. I was quick through all the sessions, and I stayed very close to these guys, while the team worked hard.”
