Oregon transfer OF Angel Laya winds up at LSU

By admin — In News — July 4, 2026

After an extensive stint in the transfer portal, one of Oregon’s top freshmen from last season has landed with a new program. Outfielder Angel Laya announced his commitment to LSU on Friday, departing Eugene for an SEC powerhouse as anticipated. The move comes not long after Oregon’s hitting coach Jack Marder left for a position at Texas, a school that was also pursuing Laya. Laya chose the Tigers over reuniting with Marder in Austin. Despite LSU not reaching the NCAA Tournament last season, the program remains a strong force and has already assembled an impressive transfer portal class to reload for 2027.
For the Ducks, Laya’s portal departure was a major surprise that triggered a ripple effect, with Naulivou Lauaki Jr. and Burke-Lee Mabeus also exiting for SEC programs, amplifying concerns for Oregon baseball’s depth. Laya earned Freshman All-American honors in his lone season at Oregon, posting a .296/.396/.538 slash line with a .934 OPS and 47 RBIs. He set Oregon freshman records with 14 home runs, 49 runs scored, and 120 total bases, and showed notable plate discipline for a young slugger by drawing 27 walks and striking out 34 times.
Oregon has been picked apart by the transfer market, losing several of the program’s top talents. Laya was among the best available in the portal, though the Ducks have also added some savvy players, and head coach Mark Wasikowski is likely far from finished making adjustments ahead of next season.
