Balogun is cleared to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 clash with Belgium after FIFA suspended his one-game ban. The 25-year-old striker received a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic as the United States beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the last-32. FIFA said the automatic one-match ban would be suspended for a year. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said it is “astonished” by FIFA’s decision and is “investigating all potential options” in response. “In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year,” FIFA stated. “If Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.” US President Donald Trump thanked FIFA for “reversing a great injustice” in a post on Truth Social, calling it, “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.” USA forward Christian Pulisic said the squad learned about the suspended ban on the bus to training on Sunday and that Balogun was “super happy.” He said Balogun had “a big smile on his face and all of ours. The foul wasn’t what it was; it was harsh.” The RBFA noted that all prior red cards in this World Cup have automatically led to suspensions and argued FIFA’s decision conflicts with the competition regulations, which they say were explicitly reaffirmed for participating nations in May. The federation added that, to protect the rights of all teams and uphold fair play, it is examining all potential options. Balogun, a World Cup standout for the United States, had not been an American choice under Trump’s plan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was among those calling for a review of the decision. When asked about the USA’s performance at the World Cup, Rubio said at a press conference, “They played great. They got screwed with that red card. There needs to be an appeal process for that. It’s probably too late.” More broadly, US fans have expressed disquiet about the red card for one of their star players, with some media outlets questioning how football rules are applied—such as the requirement to leave the field after a red card and subsequently be banned for a future match. Balogun has been a key figure for the US, scoring twice for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they began their campaign with a 4-1 win. He remains central to the United States’ World Cup hopes ahead of the knockout stage.
