Neymar has played in four World Cup campaigns. In a post-match interview with TV Globo, an emotional Neymar declared his international career with Brazil to be “over” after the Selecao were eliminated by Norway in the 2026 World Cup last-16. He had been introduced as a 67th-minute substitute with Brazil trailing 2-0, but could not prevent the exit. Neymar did convert a late penalty at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but it proved only a consolation in what is likely to be his final appearance for Brazil. “I tried, I tried. Now it’s finished. I started here, I finished here,” he said after the defeat.
Neymar made his Brazil debut at the same venue in August 2010, scoring in a 2-0 friendly win over the United States. He has since become Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 80 goals, and his 130 appearances place him second on the all-time list behind Cafu’s 142. After missing Brazil action since 2023 due to injuries, he returned for the 2026 World Cup squad. He came on as a late substitute in Brazil’s final group game—a 3-0 win over Scotland—and his only other appearance at this summer’s tournament was against Norway. This marked his fourth World Cup, having previously represented Brazil in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
