Liverpool fan Iain Christie believes Harvey Elliott should remain at Anfield after the 23-year-old returned from a difficult loan stint at Aston Villa, where he played only nine matches in all competitions. Elliott went to Villa on deadline day last year with an obligation to buy for £35m if he reached 10 Premier League appearances. He managed four appearances, starting once, and Villa boss Unai Emery indicated in November that he would not be making the move permanent. “I’m delighted,” Christie said of Elliott’s return. “I thought the decision to loan him out was crazy from the start. There were numerous occasions last season when Florian Wirtz was unavailable and we had players being shifted into that number 10 role. Those players aren’t the same kind of number 10 as Wirtz—but Elliott is.” Christie added that it seemed Slot didn’t rate him, but he would hate to see Elliott leave for another club. He’d love Elliott to report for pre-season and be told he’s Wirtz’s understudy, allowing him to slot in without disrupting the system. Having spent a season in the reserves, Elliott deserves a solid chance, and unless a really good offer comes in, Christie would prefer him to stay at Liverpool. “He’s at the perfect age, let’s play him and see what he can do. If you were to replace him on the open market, someone with that many club appearances and under-21 internationals to fit this system would likely command £70m or £80m.” So, keep him and assess his potential.
