It’s over. After Portugal’s crushing exit, eliminated as early as the round of 16 in this World Cup, Roberto Martinez announced his resignation to reporters. “I hope Portuguese supporters will remember that we gave everything for three and a half years. This is my last match with Portugal. I thank the Portuguese people and the players,” he said at the press conference. At the time of his departure, Martinez remained widely seen as the primary figure responsible for Portugal’s failures at Euro 2024 and at this World Cup. He leaves with a trophy to his name, however, the 2025 Nations League, won against Spain. According to A Bola, Jorge Jesus is the leading candidate to replace Martinez as head coach of the national team. Â
