Rewriting my Lakers trade idea finally brings in Jonathan Kuminga, but cuts ties with others originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Lakers are facing a mix of immediate and long-term challenges, largely because they lack assets and promising young players, and frankly, they don’t currently project as a contending team. Aside from Luka Doncic, it’s difficult to envision a clear path for this team’s future. Doncic is otherworldly in his own right, so it wouldn’t be shocking if the Lakers enjoyed some level of success with him, but beyond that, this roster doesn’t seem to be advancing toward sustained competitiveness, and it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which they become a true title threat.
That said, it wouldn’t be crazy for the Lakers to take a swing on a young player. Given the limited future assets and the sparse supply of young, talented pieces within Los Angeles, pursuing a player like Jonathan Kuminga could make strategic sense. One writer recently floated the idea, though the price would likely exceed what many Lakers fans would be comfortable with. “The problem, however, is going to be the price point,” Jedd Pagaduan wrote. “Kuminga was slated to make around $24 million for next season, but the Hawks chose to reject his team option, making him a free agent. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how much the 23-year-old will demand in the open market.”
“The Lakers could, perhaps, package the recently-acquired Jaden Hardy along with a slew of second-round picks to bring Kuminga over in a sign-and-trade with the Hawks. But does LA truly want to deplete their asset base even further after giving up the world to trade for Kessler?” Not that Jaden Hardy is some revelation, and second-round picks aren’t particularly valuable in today’s NBA, but the Lakers really don’t have much else to offer. Sure, they could assemble a few other players in future trades, but the reality remains that Los Angeles has almost nothing of substance, and one more bad move could trap this franchise in a position it might struggle to escape.
Other circulating topics include a Warriors trade proposal that would bring in Bucks star Draymond Green and a separate note about how Green shut down a Celtics lineup that traded Jaylen Brown. There’s also chatter about a potential Anthony Davis trade and a Warriors pitch to LeBron James that’s been revealed, though it’s not regarded as a strong option for improved SEO. Additional headlines explore a Lakers trade idea that pairs Luka Doncic with Nikola Jokic, and broader discussions on how the Warriors’ approach to the Lakers could shape the team’s near-term outlook.
