Preston North End have completed the acquisition of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Alfie Devine on a five-year deal, with the transfer representing a club-record outlay for the Lilywhites. While the fee remains undisclosed, the club described it as “almost three times” the amount paid for Callum Lang, the Portsmouth forward who joined in February, a figure reported to be around £2 million.
Devine, aged 21, impressed during a loan spell with Preston last season, scoring eight goals in 45 league appearances for the Lancashire side. He developed through Wigan Athletic’s academy before moving to Tottenham in August 2020, where he earned the distinction of being Spurs’ youngest-ever goalscorer after netting in an FA Cup match against Marine at the age of 16 years and 163 days in January 2021.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Devine reflected on the lengthy process and his decision to join Preston. “From the end of last season going into the summer, it was always a priority in terms of where I wanted to be. It took its time, but I’m delighted it’s gone through,” he said. “From the first minute I came here until my last minute of last season, I absolutely loved it.”
The move marks a significant moment for Preston, who have tied down a promising young talent with the potential to grow within their ranks over the next half-decade. Devine’s arrival adds to a summer of activity as the club looks to reinforce their squad and push for advancement in the Championship.
As the 2026 season continues to unfold, Preston North End will be keen to maximize Devine’s versatility and goal threat from midfield, leveraging the experience he gained during his stint with the club last season. The deal also reinforces the club’s long-term strategy of integrating young, technically capable players who can contribute both creatively and on goalscoring occasions.
Devine’s father, Sean, who played rugby league for St Helens, brings additional sporting pedigree to the new chapter in his son’s career, although the focus remains firmly on Alfie’s development and impact within Preston’s plans. The midfielder’s decision to commit to a five-year term signals confidence in the club’s direction and a belief that he can flourish under Preston’s coaching setup and competitive environment.
With all July deals now wrapped up, Preston North End fans will be watching closely to see how Devine’s presence influences the team’s performances throughout the campaign. The club’s supporters, analysts, and stakeholders will be keen to assess how the midfielder translates his talent from his prolific loan spell into a sustained contribution in Preston’s midfield engine room, and whether his early promise can be converted into a lasting period of success for both player and club.
