U.S. vs. Belgium had a total American audience of 42 million

The bright side? Monday night’s World Cup clash between the United States and Belgium in the Round of 16 drew a massive audience. The less favorable note? Monday’s U.S. vs. Belgium matchup also saw substantial viewership in the spotlight, underscoring a nation’s growing appetite for the sport. Early figures reported by Fox and Telemundo show an average audience of about 42 million viewers, with roughly 30 million tuning in to the English-language broadcast on Fox and around 12 million watching the Spanish-language feed on Telemundo and Peacock. In context, that level of engagement compares with the NFL’s divisional-round audience in January 2026, which averaged about 39.2 million viewers.
The U.S. team’s unceremonious exit, delivered through a sluggish performance that many observers believe was influenced by outside distractions, is likely to temper ratings in the rounds to come. Yet there’s a clear counterpoint: had the Americans managed to keep winning, the numbers might have continued climbing, with the final match potentially nearing the 100-million mark. There’s little doubt that soccer has evolved into a mainstream American sport, and the broader implications could be pronounced across the landscape of American soccer.
As this momentum builds, it will be fascinating to observe how MLS and the Premier League ride the surge, particularly as fans who have become captivated by the sport—myself included—seek out additional avenues to watch more games. The rising visibility and growing fan base could translate into stronger domestic leagues, increased broadcasting opportunities, and a more vibrant ecosystem for players, clubs, and fans alike. In the wake of Monday’s numbers and the dramatic arc of the tournament, the sport’s foothold in the United States seems poised to deepen, reshaping the American sports map for years to come.
