World Cup champion Per Mertesacker is reportedly being considered by the DFB

After another string of recent failures for Germany at the World Cup, there is a broad consensus among fans and critics that a fundamental shake-up is required at the DFB. While the spotlight is currently fixed on the head coach position, with Jürgen Klopp emerging as the leading candidate, there is another intriguing option that could bring about meaningful change within the federation. As highlighted by @iMiaSanMia, 2014 world champion Per Mertesacker is being considered by the DFB. The former German defender spent eight years heading the Arsenal academy before leaving the club this summer. His experience at one of Europe’s most renowned academies could make him an ideal fit to revamp the DFB’s youth development system and craft a comprehensive plan that rethinks how Germany trains its top talents to succeed at the highest levels.
“Everything Per Mertesacker says on TV is thoughtful and well-founded. He’s never insulting, yet he remains critical. Having spent eight years at Arsenal, he must possess qualities we need right now—qualities that matter in a leadership role. As a former player, he brings vast international experience. He has consistently demonstrated the ability to work well with people. And one thing is certain: he would not pursue the job for financial reasons, but out of a genuine motivation to take on a challenge, to build something, and to drive it forward with passion. Those are exactly the kinds of leaders we need at this moment—individuals who have earned their stripes through hard work and dedication and are willing to put in the long hours,” Uli Hoeneß told Bild.
Hoeneß makes a compelling case, and it isn’t hard to imagine that the reigning World Cup champions could achieve success under a refreshed DFB leadership with Mertesacker in a key role. While Klopp remains the obvious choice for the managerial post, Mertesacker could prove to be an equally vital component of Germany’s forthcoming reboot. His track record at Arsenal suggests he has the vision to reform youth development, instill a new philosophy, and guide Germany’s next generation of players toward sustained success on the world stage.
