​Mavrik Bourque’s ascent in the NHL has moved with the pace and brightness of a shooting star. Just two seasons ago, he was dominating the AHL, tallying 77 points in 71 games for the Texas Stars, yet he received only a single call-up to the Dallas roster. That momentum shifted when he joined Nashville via a trade that sent Fedor Svechkov and Zach L’Heureux to Dallas. The Predators now envision him in a middle-six role, providing essential depth at center. Bourque himself emphasizes the importance of consistency and belief: “I have to show up and be able to deliver for the role I’m in. If I show what I’ve got and believe in what I can do, I’ll have a chance to be in a good spot.”
At the outset of the 2024-25 season, Bourque earned a full-time spot with Dallas, appearing in 73 games and recording 25 points. The following season, he played all 82 games, finishing with 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists). It’s remarkable to consider that much of his time with the Stars was spent out of position. By March 8, 2026, Bourque’s presence in Dallas was evident as he skated against the Chicago Blackhawks at the American Airlines Center, illustrating how far he had progressed from those earlier, more limited NHL minutes. His early seasons with Dallas saw him as a fourth-line contributor and a penalty-killer, a transition from his high-scoring AHL days to the NHL’s demanding two-way responsibilities. He credits the experience of adapting to minutes with more defensive emphasis and then reclaiming a larger offensive role as pivotal to his development. “I was coming from an offensive season in the AHL to the NHL, where I was playing mostly defensive minutes. In my second season, I played more offense and had a bigger role with some key guys leaving.”
That accumulation of experiences—covering both ends of the rink, learning to play a more substantial defensive role, and then reclaiming offense as opportunities emerged—made Bourque an attractive option for the Predators and executive Chris MacFarland during their search for a capable center. MacFarland described him as “a smart, heady hockey player” and “a good two-way guy that we think the arrow is still pointing up for.” Bourque embodies a blend of youth and breadth of experience that is increasingly rare in today’s NHL landscape, where versatile centers who can contribute in all zones are highly valued.
As Bourque continues to develop within the Predators’ system, the expectation is that his center-focused acumen will translate into more sustained production and more consistent line-driving play.
