‘My understanding is…’ – Fabrizio Romano drops hint over Mo Salah future after World Cup drama

Fabrizio Romano has revealed new details about the “calls” that discussed Mo Salah’s future, as the Egyptian star featured in a World Cup classic on Tuesday. Salah, who left Liverpool at the end of last season, is now a free agent after a remarkable nine-year stint at Anfield during which he became the club’s third-highest all-time scorer. The news comes as he helped Egypt fight back in their Group stage clash, but ultimately the team fell short in a 3-2 defeat to World Cup champions Argentina, with Enzo Fernandez delivering the stoppage-time winner.

Romano’s latest update indicates that despite prior chatter in May suggesting Salah had given a nod to a move to Fenerbahce, there is now fresh speculation about a potential departure from European football to explore opportunities elsewhere. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the reporter outlined several avenues: “He has the possibility from Saudi Arabia because in Saudi they have always wanted Mo Salah. For two or three years, Mo Salah has been a top target. My understanding is that there are also conversations from MLS to gauge the situation of Mo Salah, so MLS could be a possibility as well. MLS and Saudi, let’s see what Salah decides, but after the World Cup there will be time for him and his agent Ramy Abbas to determine the future.”
This latest remark from Romano aligns with long-standing interest from Saudi clubs, notably Al-Ittihad, who three summers ago made an audacious £150 million approach on deadline day. If Salah chooses to leave on a free transfer, any suitor could in theory snap him up without a transfer fee, though his earnings would be substantial. Reports have put his Liverpool wages at around £400,000 per week prior to his departure, which would significantly narrow the field of clubs capable of meeting his financial demands. Still, the 34-year-old may privately believe he can still compete at a high level in Europe and may not be ready to “semi-retire” to the Middle East or MLS just yet.
Salah now deserves a period of rest following Egypt’s World Cup exit, and the football world will be watching closely to see where his next steps lead. Back at Liverpool, the transition will be stark for supporters who have grown accustomed to seeing the No. 11 on the right flank; his absence will be felt as the club prepares for a new season under a refreshed lineup. The next chapter in Salah’s career promises to be as closely analyzed as his time at Anfield, with fans and pundits alike eager to know whether a return to a top European stage is on the horizon or if a fresh challenge abroad will beckon.
