Fulham confirm Alvaro Arbeloa as new head coach on three-year contract

Fulham have announced the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach after Marco Silva’s exit to Benfica earlier this summer. The former Real Madrid boss has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage, tying him to the Premier League club until the summer of 2029. Arbeloa’s ascent into management has been swift, having progressed through Real Madrid’s coaching ranks from the academy to the Castilla side before taking charge of the senior team in the latter part of last season. He succeeds Silva, who spent five years at Fulham, guiding them back to the top flight and establishing them as a consistent presence in the Premier League.
Fulham considered several candidates for the vacancy, but Arbeloa ultimately convinced the club’s hierarchy during discussions about his football philosophy, coaching staff, and long-term vision for the team. Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Arbeloa expressed his enthusiasm for starting a new chapter in English football. “It is a real honour for me to embark on this new stage at Fulham FC,” he said. “I feel a great sense of responsibility, and I’m deeply grateful to Mr Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me.” The Spaniard added that he looked forward to meeting the players, experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage, and beginning pre-season preparations.
Fulham owner Shahid Khan described Arbeloa as the standout candidate after a series of meetings throughout June. Khan praised the Spaniard’s ambition, attacking philosophy, and commitment to youth development, believing he is the right coach to drive the club forward. Tony Khan also welcomed the appointment, highlighting Arbeloa’s extensive football knowledge, strong work ethic, and determination to succeed in the Premier League.
Arbeloa’s coaching career began with Real Madrid’s youth setup, where he secured significant success across several academy levels. He won league titles at multiple youth levels and steered Real Madrid’s Under-19s to a domestic and European treble. This success earned him promotion to Real Madrid Castilla before he was entrusted with the first-team duties following Xabi Alonso’s departure. Although his tenure as Madrid’s boss lasted only for the remainder of a season, Arbeloa guided the side to second place in La Liga and delivered an impressive Champions League run that included a victory over Manchester City before a late defeat to Bayern Munich.
As a player, Arbeloa enjoyed a distinguished career with Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Spain. He collected two Champions League titles, La Liga, the FIFA World Cup, and two European Championships before ending his playing days with West Ham United in 2017. Now, Arbeloa will begin preparations for his inaugural campaign with Fulham, with his competitive debut anticipated against Chelsea, a match that will see him face his former Real Madrid teammate Xabi Alonso, in what promises to be an intriguing start to his tenure. His appointment marks a bold new chapter for Fulham as they seek to build on recent progress and push for continued improvement in the Premier League.
