Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley entered his second full offseason under intense scrutiny from the Aggie faithful, who pressed for sweeping changes to the coaching staff. The pressure culminated in the decision to replace second-year pitching coach Jason Kelley, a move that came to fruition just days after the Aggies were eliminated by USC in the College Station Regional. In the wake of that shakeup, Earley brought in MLB pitching coach and coordinator Barry Enright, signaling a shift toward a more high-profile, professional approach on the mound. The staff also received a notable reshuffling as former associate head coach and recruiting ace Nolan Cain returned after two seasons with Texas, a reunion that surprised many given the Longhorns’ success as they advanced to the College World Series before a setback against Georgia.
With the 2026 MLB Draft looming and Earley poised to lose his top three hitters, the Aggies intensified their efforts in the transfer portal. They added ten new players, headlined by former Clemson catcher Nate Savoie, who sits as the No. 2-ranked player in the portal. The latest addition is Oklahoma transfer outfielder Alec Blair, who is set to join the program in College Station after contributing to Oklahoma’s national title run last month. Blair, a former blue-chip prospect and dual-sport athlete, brings ample potential to an established lineup even with the departures looming on the horizon.
According to D1Baseball’s Joe Healy, Blair is expected to take another step forward in his development, a progression he has already begun by forcing coaches to insert him into the lineup as a freshman due to his prodigious talent. Blair entered Oklahoma as a blue-chip recruit in the 2025 class and was anticipated to split time between basketball and baseball with the Sooners. However, after just one game on the hardwood, he shifted his focus entirely to baseball, where he posted a .247/.320/.376 slash line in 103 plate appearances. As the 2026 season approached, Blair faced a tightening of playing time in Oklahoma’s outfield, and now he transfers to Texas A&M with the goal of maximizing his substantial talent.
Blair is expected to compete for a starting spot immediately this fall. When paired with rising sophomore outfielder Jorian Wilson, Texas A&M’s 2027 lineup appears set to contend with or perhaps surpass last season’s production. The Aggies have built a lineup that blends veteran leadership from the transfer market with young talent poised to elevate the program to new heights.
As the offseason moves forward, fans can anticipate further coverage of Earley’s revamped staff, the performance and integration of Blair and the other portal acquisitions, and how these changes translate to the field for Texas A&M in the coming season.
