Former Newport County manager Dave Hughes has been appointed as Everton’s head of academy player development, with additional responsibility for overseeing the Under-21s as part of a broad series of changes to the club’s academy structure. The Welsh coach succeeds Paul Tait, who spent 16 years within Everton’s academy system.
This marks Hughes’s first official return to football after being dismissed as Newport County boss in November of last year, when the Exiles sat at the bottom of League Two and had won only two of their opening 16 league games. Hughes was appointed at Everton on May 23, 2025, and he immediately steered Newport County to safety in the 2024-25 season, guiding the club to finish seven points clear of the relegation zone.
In moving away from management, Hughes returns to a role he knows well—academy football—where he has built a strong reputation over the last two decades. His career in youth development has included spells with Shrewsbury Town, Watford, Aston Villa, Southampton, Cardiff City, and Manchester United, as well as a significant contribution to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).
Everton’s technical director, Nick Cox, confirmed the appointment and outlined Hughes’s expanded remit. He stated on the club’s website that, going forward, the under-21s will be led by Dave Hughes as part of his broader duties as head of academy player development. This move signals Everton’s intention to strengthen its youth pathways and align the development of players across the academy and the under-21s under a unified leadership.
Hughes’s appointment is being viewed as a strategic step by Everton to enhance the progression of young talents through to the first team. His track record in youth development and his extensive experience across multiple top-tier clubs and national associations position him to influence training methodologies, talent identification, and player progression pathways at Finch Farm. As Everton continues to evolve its academy model, Hughes’s leadership is expected to bring coherence to the development process, ensure consistency in coaching standards, and optimize the pathway for academy players aiming to reach the senior level.
