It’s shaping up to be an almost ideal day for Utica’s Boilermaker Road Race, as cool morning conditions are forecasted by the Binghamton National Weather Service to greet runners. The 49th edition of this beloved event reached its entry caps at the end of June, with 4,500 runners signed up for the 5K through the city, sponsored by Utica National, and 11,000 tackling the featured 15K. Meteorologist Adam Gill of the Binghamton NWS said the weekend’s average temperature for the Road Race typically sits in the mid to upper 80s, but the weekend forecast paints a more favorable picture for participants.
Gill pointed out that Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny, with only a small amount of cloud cover—roughly five to ten percent. He noted that conditions look dry, with light winds around three miles per hour, contributing to an overall pleasant race atmosphere. At the moment, there are no indications of precipitation on race day. Humidity is expected to be on the drier side, which, combined with sunscreen and proper hydration, should help runners manage the warm but manageable temperatures.
The day is anticipated to begin in the lower 60s around 8 a.m., then climb into the upper 80s by late afternoon. Gill added that the early morning hours will likely see temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s before noon, giving runners a cooler start compared to the peak heat of the day. By around 8 p.m., the forecast calls for a cooling trend back into the mid-70s, providing a comfortable finish for those crossing the Boilermaker’s final timing mats.
A cold front moving through Thursday night into Friday is expected to dry out the region for the weekend, and the area doesn’t anticipate another front to affect conditions through Monday or Monday night. Despite the difficulty of predicting every minute of a 24-hour event, Gill expressed confidence that race day will be fairly favorable. He emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and protecting skin with sunscreen to cope with the late-summer warmth.
