2026 FSU Schedule Preview: Clemson Tigers

What is widely regarded as the toughest three-game stretch on Florida State’s 2026 schedule will culminate with a home date against the Clemson Tigers on Halloween. There is a bye between the Miami game and Clemson’s visit, offering a brief respite, but if the earlier portion of the slate doesn’t end Mike Norvell’s tenure, there’s a strong chance this gauntlet finishes him off as it begins on October 9 with a road trip to Louisville.
Date: Saturday, Oct. 31, TBD
Location: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Florida
Previous matchup: Clemson 24, FSU 10
All-time series: FSU leads 21-17 but has won just one of the last 10
2025 record: 7-6 (4-4)
Two things to know:
Cade Klubnik’s long-rumored tenure as Clemson’s quarterback is over, or at least nearing an end. While the Tigers have not formally named a starter, Christopher Vizzina appears to be the frontrunner. A former four-star recruit who hovered around the top 100 in the 2023 class, the redshirt junior has largely served in mop-up duty during his first three seasons, throwing for 596 yards, four touchdowns and one interception while completing 61% of his passes in 14 games (one start). He’ll also work with a largely reconstituted coaching staff, as Clemson moved on from Garrett Riley and brought back Chad Morris—previously Clemson’s OC/QBs coach from 2011-14 before an unfruitful head coaching stint at SMU and Arkansas. Reunited with Morris, the Tigers seem to be attempting a return to the “good old days” while hoping it isn’t too late for a liftoff.
Defensive coordinator Tom Allen is back for a second season with Clemson. After earning praise as an ace hire last offseason for anchoring a stout Penn State defense on the way to the College Football Playoff semifinals, Clemson’s defense didn’t quite meet expectations last year. The Tigers finished ninth in the ACC in yards per play allowed (5.32) for the second straight season, after finishing first or second in that statistic in three of the prior four seasons. Clemson has leaned harder into the transfer market this offseason, increasing their defensive presence with nine of 11 transfers on the defensive side, including five defensive linemen and four defensive backs. Will the defense progress in Allen’s 4-2-5 scheme with a full year of installation and junior players gaining experience?
Three key players:
Redshirt junior defensive end Will Heldt: Clemson’s standout transfer from Purdue last offseason, Heldt delivered on the hype with 7.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss in 2025. Any hope for defensive improvement will hinge on his continued impact, especially against a tough opponent in Florida State.
Junior wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr.: An immediate-impact player as a freshman in 2024, Wesco appeared on track for another strong season after playing just seven games last year before a back injury sustained on a tackle attempt ended his campaign. Cleared for practice entering this season, Wesco seems poised for a third consecutive standout year after posting more than 500 receiving yards in 2024 and maintaining a high production level with multiple big plays.
Note: The upcoming matchup is set to feature high stakes as Florida State looks to navigate a brutal stretch on its schedule, with Clemson presenting a formidable challenge at Doak Campbell Stadium. The outcome could influence not only the game itself but also the broader trajectory of both programs as they head deeper into the season.
