Arkansas basketball announces Thanksgiving showdown with Michigan State

Fayetteville, Arkansas — The Razorbacks will host Thanksgiving basketball in 2026 as part of a promising trio of Thanksgiving Day television appearances featuring John Calipari’s program. Arkansas announced a primetime showdown with Michigan State on Wednesday, July 8, with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Central Time on CBS. The game will be played at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, the home court of the Detroit Pistons, marking another national holiday showcase for the program.
Calipari expressed gratitude for CBS’s commitment to Thanksgiving Day opportunities, noting the valuable exposure and on-court benefits his team has gained from these national telecasts. He highlighted last season’s Thanksgiving Day game on CBS as the most viewed college basketball game of the season and one of the most-watched regular-season games in more than three decades. Nielsen’s data supports the significance of these games: the Arkansas versus Duke Thanksgiving matchup in Chicago drew an average of 6.813 million viewers, the largest regular-season college basketball audience on a single network in more than 30 years. The prior high in this metric occurred on February 21, 1993, when Purdue faced Indiana on CBS with 7.225 million viewers.
Although the game in Detroit won’t be a true road contest, it effectively places Arkansas in Michigan State’s home region. The teams were originally slated to meet in Fayetteville in the 2025-26 season after Arkansas visited Michigan State for a nonconference game in the early part of that season, a game won by the Spartans 69-66. Calipari has suggested that Michigan State could still schedule a road game at Arkansas at another point in the future.
Arkansas will again navigate a demanding schedule before entering the SEC. In addition to the Michigan State game on Thanksgiving, the Razorbacks have announced other high-profile road tests against North Carolina and a neutral-site showdown with Arizona in Phoenix. Erik Calipari’s team finished the most recent season 28-9 and captured the SEC Tournament title in his second year at the helm, matching the 28-win total of the 2021-22 Razorbacks, a mark that stood behind only the 1994-95 squad’s 32-7 national final run.
Looking ahead, Arkansas is set to add one of the nation’s elite recruiting classes, featuring top-30 prospects Jordan Smith Jr. (No. 2), JJ Andrews (No. 12), Abdou Toure (No. 26), and Miika Muurinen (No. 55). Additional coverage and updates on the Razorbacks’ season plans will continue as the national schedule unfolds.
