The floodgates are beginning to swing open for college sports sponsorships. Since rules were enacted earlier this year permitting teams and universities to collaborate with brands to place jersey patches on athletes’ uniforms, we have already witnessed a string of entertaining and financially rewarding deals. This week, the Kansas Jayhawks may have set a new benchmark. The University of Kansas is reportedly entering into a five-year partnership with Ripple, a digital finance company, to feature the XRP cryptocurrency logo on every player’s uniform. This deal, if completed, would represent one of the most lucrative university sponsorships under the newly established guidelines.
Kansas athletic director Travis Goff told Sports Business Journal that the aim was to secure an arrangement that would affect all Olympic and collegiate programs across the university rather than merely adding a single jersey patch. “It’s one thing to put a logo on jerseys,” he explained. “It’s a whole other opportunity to bring to life the story of what that business, that company, that entity represents and what they do in the marketplace.”
Ripple’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, who is an alumnus of KU and once served as student body president in Lawrence, commented on the potential collaboration. “We’re at a stage where you have a pioneering industry in crypto and blockchain meeting a pioneering time and place around collegiate athletic programs,” Garlinghouse said. “That is an opportunity to jointly innovate and to jointly try new things.”
The anticipated partnership extends beyond jersey signage. In addition to the XRP emblem on uniforms, the deal is expected to feature Ripple branding on Kansas athletics venues through signage, digital properties, and other branding opportunities across all Kansas athletic facilities.
