Every year I pause to forecast who I believe will emerge as the top players on Boise State’s football team. With a roster loaded with unproven talent, this season’s list proved more challenging to assemble than in years past. The squad looks more proven on offense, and that confidence is reflected in our rankings. Last week we continued our countdown by spotlighting a hard-hitting safety. This week we shift our focus to the offensive side of the ball, highlighting a tight end poised to have a big fall. At number seven we have Matt Wagner.
Over the past few seasons, junior tight end Matt Wagner has often played behind the recently graduated Matt Lauter. This season, Wagner is expected to be one of the primary targets for senior quarterback Maddux Madsen. Wagner brings elite size and began his career primarily as a blocker in both the running game and pass protection. Last year, he emerged as a dependable receiving option, starting 10 games and hauling in 24 catches for 251 yards. I’d be surprised if those numbers don’t double in 2026.
Wagner possesses an NFL-caliber frame and surprising speed, which makes him a difficult matchup for linebackers in the Pac-12. Throughout the 2025 campaign, he demonstrated a willingness to work the middle of the field, and his speed helped him accumulate a notable amount of yards after the catch. If Wagner takes another step forward, an all-conference season could be within reach.
Countdown so far:
#10: Ben Ford and Rasean Jones
#9: Boen Phelps
#8: Derek Ganter Jr.
#7: Matt Wagner
With Wagner’s combination of size, speed, and improving receiving ability, Boise State fans can anticipate him becoming a central figure in the offense this season. If he builds on last year’s progress, he could become a major weapon for Madsen and a catalyst for the Broncos’ aerial attack.
